Perhaps one of the most popular app that most people will look for after they have jailbroken their iPad is Installous which we think is rather unfortunate as the original purpose for jailbreaking should be to break down the limitations of what the iPad is capable of in terms of functionality. We do not condone the download of pirated/cracked apps.
Nonetheless, we cannot stop you from using Installous and would rather you find out how to go about getting it from here where we can include proper advisory on its usage.
What is Installous?
Installous is a jailbreak app that allows you to download more iPad / iOS apps for free. A lot of the apps offered in Installous are illegally cracked paid apps that are sold on Apple’s App Store.
To be fair, Installous is marketed as a method for you to ‘try’ iOS apps which means trying before purchasing and we can see the reasoning behind this. As it is, there is no reasonable way to fully preview apps in the App Store to find out whether they suit your needs. In addition to that, return policies are somewhat hazy and random. For example you are looking for a Premium GPS app; most of them priced at say $20 (approx. RM60) which is not a small investment. Imagine purchasing x3 GPS apps from the top brands just to find out the best fit for you. It obviously doesn’t make sense to do so. Piracy will never be dead because of this and well… also because ‘free’ is such a wonderful concept.
HOWEVER, you can reason until the cows come home but it still doesn’t make downloading cracked apps legal. Be aware of that.
On to the tutorial:
Instructions
Step 1
Open ‘Cydia’ on your iPad.
If you do not have Cydia, it is likely you have not yet jailbroken your iPad. If that is the case, you can refer to our jailbreak tutorials.
Step 2
Tap on ‘Sources’.
Step 3
Tap on ‘Edit’ followed by ‘Add’.
Step 4
A prompt box will pop up. Type in this address: “http://cydia.hackulo.us” and then tap on ‘Add Source’.
Step 5
Read the Source Warning advisory to make sure you are aware of the circumstances. Tap on ‘Add Anyway’ if you wish to proceed. Installous should begin downloading and installing which will take 2-3 minutes.
Step 6
Once complete, tap on ‘Return to Cydia’.
Step 7
You should now be able to see ‘Hackulo.us’ listed as a source. Tap on ‘Done’ and then on ‘Hackulo.us’.
Step 8
Scroll down and tap on ‘Installous 4′.
Step 9
Tap on ‘Install’ followed by ‘Confirm’.
Once the installation is complete, tap on ‘Return to Cydia’.
Step 10
You now have Installous for your iPad. Verify this by looking for the Installous icon on the Home Screen.
Conclusion: Support App Developers
On a final note, let us not forget the developers who put in a lot of their time and effort into creating the apps and games we often take for granted. Without their work, the iPad wouldn’t even be half the device it is today.
So if you plan on using Installous, use it responsibly and with moral introspection by purchasing the apps via the App Store if you are satisfied with the value they give you. Support the developers. Don’t support piracy.
