What’s New?

New notification center, iMessage, Twitter integration, multitasking gestures and the list goes on. There are more than 200 new features. This is a HUGE update.

Should You Update?

Absolutely! iPad 2 owners who want to jailbreak should however stay away as there is currently no jailbreak solution past 4.3.3.

How to Update?

Requirements

You will need the iTunes software to perform this update. You can download a free copy from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. If you already have it, please make sure your iTunes is at Version 10.5. To check:

This update is in response to a PDF vulnerability that was exposed during the recent launch of JailbreakMe 3.0. As this is a security fix, we do recommend this update.

Make sure your iPad is updated or has previously been updated to the iOS firmware for which you wish to save the SHSH blob. If you have previously updated to 4.3.2 but the latest version on your device is 4.3.3, TinyUmbrella will still be able to save the older SHSH provided that Apple has not already stopped signing it.

Download and install TinyUmbrella on your computer. You need to get the latest version from their official website HERE.

Open the TinyUmbrella file you have downloaded and install it by following the installation wizard instructions.

Once installed, connect your iPad to the computer using the supplied USB cable and open up the TinyUmbrella program. If you have difficulty locating the program, simply do a search for ‘tinyumbrella’ using Spotlight.

Upon opening TinyUmbrella, you will have to click ‘OK’ on a series of pop-up prompts which we recommend reading through even if you may not fully understand them at this time.

Step 2

You should be able to see your iPad listed on the left side column. If it is not listed, try checking the USB cable connection. Make sure your device is listed and then select it before proceeding.

Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab.

Step 3

Uncheck ‘Request SHSH From Cydia’.

Click on ‘Save SHSH’. You can then check on the save progress by clicking on the ‘Log’ tab.

Step 4

Under the ‘Log’ tab, you should be able to see a string of text resembling ‘iPad2WIFI 4.3.x (8J2) SHSH SUCCESFULLY saved!’.

The text will vary depending on what iPad model you have and which iOS version is being saved. Of course, your objective is to save the latest iOS firmware that can be jailbroken or the one that serves your required purpose. In the image example above, you can see that the 4.3.3 SHSH blob has been successfully saved but there is a failure to save the 4.3.1 blob as Apple is no longer signing it. To further confirm that your SHSH blob has been saved, click on the ‘General’ tab.

The succesfully saved SHSHs should be listed here.

Specifically for those wanting to jailbreak the iPad, the subject of SHSH blobs is one that you should get to understand.

SHSH Blobs Defined

An SHSH blob (short for Signature HaSH, blob simply referring to a blob of data) is basically a digital signature that the Apple Server uses to approve a restore process for iOS devices such as the iPad.

Why Do You Need to Save SHSH Blobs?

In order to understand why it is important to save SHSH blobs if you want to jailbreak, we are going to explain it in the context of the role it plays during a restore process.

During a restore process you open up iTunes on the computer, connect your iPad via the supplied USB cable and once the device is detected, you proceed to click on ‘Restore’. What happens then is that iTunes will send a restore request to the Apple server. The Apple server will have to respond by either rejecting or approving the request which will depend on whether the firmware that you are requesting to restore to is the current version available; ‘current’ here meaning whatever firmware versions Apple is still approving.

If the Apple server approves the request, it will send a digital signature back to iTunes which is called an SHSH blob. Only then can the restore process happen.

An ‘EXAMPLE’ Scenario: Let’s say that the latest jailbreak only works for iOS 4.3.3 and Apple has already released 4.3.4. They have also stopped signing/approving restore requests for 4.3.3. One fine day after installing some jailbreak apps on Cydia, your iPad suddenly has an error which requires you to restore the device (not common, but it can happen). Now if you have saved your SHSH blob for 4.3.3, you can use it to trick iTunes (more on how to do this in a different iML tutorial) into thinking the Apple server has signed/approved the restore request and thus be able to restore to a firmware that can be jailbroken; in this case 4.3.3. On the other hand, if you did not save your SHSH blob, you will be forced to restore to 4.3.4 which you will not be able to jailbreak. And if you are wondering why you can’t just get the SHSH blob from a website or someone else, it is because the SHSH is attached to your iPad’s ECID which makes each blob unique.

How to Save SHSH Blobs?

There are mainly 2 ways to do this:

1) ♥ Make my life easier, thanks!

*It seems that you don’t actually have to do anything now as Cydia automatically starts saving your SHSH blobs for you once you open the app for the first time. Sweet!

When you see the button that says ♥ Make my life easier, thanks! in the Cydia app’s home screen, simply tap on it and your SHSH blobs will be automatically saved on Cydia’s servers for the current iOS firmware you are on as well as all future versions. You’ll never have to remember to save your SHSH blobs ever again. However, saving SHSH blobs using this method may take up to a week depending on Cydia’s server traffic so there is a bit of a risk period.

If you want to confirm that your SHSH blobs have indeed been saved, you should be able to see SHSH: iOS (versions) in green colored text on top of ‘Welcome to Cydia’ on the Cydia app’s home screen. If it is still in the process of saving, a similar string of text should appear in red instead.

2) TinyUmbrella

TinyUmbrella is a software you run on the computer that helps to save SHSH blobs. It is also the same software you will be using to recover and make use of the SHSH blobs when you need them. The way it differs from ‘make my life easier’ for saving is that it grabs the SHSH blob instantly rather than having to wait for Cydia to request for it (which previously mentioned may take up to a week). TinyUmbrella also saves the SHSH blobs on your computer versus on Cydia’s server as with ‘make my life easier’.

TinyUmbrella will require a bit more work but we recommend this method if you know that Apple will stop signing the current firmware that can be jailbroken anytime soon as ‘make my life easier’ has the wait period risk factor. *Apple will be releasing 4.3.4 anytime now so you will need to save 4.3.3 SHSH blobs ASAP.

Perhaps one of the most popular app that most people will look for after they have jailbroken their iPad is Installous which we think is rather unfortunate as the original purpose for jailbreaking should be to break down the limitations of what the iPad is capable of in terms of functionality. We do not condone the download of pirated/cracked apps.

Nonetheless, we cannot stop you from using Installous and would rather you find out how to go about getting it from here where we can include proper advisory on its usage.

What is Installous?

Installous is a jailbreak app that allows you to download more iPad / iOS apps for free. A lot of the apps offered in Installous are illegally cracked paid apps that are sold on Apple’s App Store.

To be fair, Installous is marketed as a method for you to ‘try’ iOS apps which means trying before purchasing and we can see the reasoning behind this. As it is, there is no reasonable way to fully preview apps in the App Store to find out whether they suit your needs. In addition to that, return policies are somewhat hazy and random. For example you are looking for a Premium GPS app; most of them priced at say $20 (approx. RM60) which is not a small investment. Imagine purchasing x3 GPS apps from the top brands just to find out the best fit for you. It obviously doesn’t make sense to do so. Piracy will never be dead because of this and well… also because ‘free’ is such a wonderful concept.

HOWEVER, you can reason until the cows come home but it still doesn’t make downloading cracked apps legal. Be aware of that.

On to the tutorial:

Instructions

Step 1

Open ‘Cydia’ on your iPad.

If you do not have Cydia, it is likely you have not yet jailbroken your iPad. If that is the case, you can refer to our jailbreak tutorials.

Step 2

Tap on ‘Sources’.

Step 3

Tap on ‘Edit’ followed by ‘Add’.

Step 4

A prompt box will pop up. Type in this address: “http://cydia.hackulo.us” and then tap on ‘Add Source’.

Step 5

Read the Source Warning advisory to make sure you are aware of the circumstances. Tap on ‘Add Anyway’ if you wish to proceed. Installous should begin downloading and installing which will take 2-3 minutes.

Step 6

Once complete, tap on ‘Return to Cydia’.

Step 7

You should now be able to see ‘Hackulo.us’ listed as a source. Tap on ‘Done’ and then on ‘Hackulo.us’.

Step 8

Scroll down and tap on ‘Installous 4′.

Step 9

Tap on ‘Install’ followed by ‘Confirm’.

Once the installation is complete, tap on ‘Return to Cydia’.

Step 10

You now have Installous for your iPad. Verify this by looking for the Installous icon on the Home Screen.

The following are instructions on how to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 using JailbreakMe 3.0 for the iPad 1 and iPad 2. This is an untethered jailbreak.

Prerequisites for Jailbreak

This jailbreak is performed on the iPad itself. No computer is required. Ensure that you have adequate battery levels and an active Internet connection.

It is recommended that you update the iPad to the iOS 4.3.3 firmware although the jailbreak will work on all 4.3.x versions.

Save SHSH Blob Recommendation

For this particular jailbreak, it is highly recommended that you save your SHSH blobs as Apple may release iOS version 4.3.4 very soon and stop signing the current 4.3.3 firmware. Not sure what we’re talking about? Read more here.

iTunes Back Up Instructions

While an iTunes back up is optional, we highly recommend it. This is to allow you to restore to your back up in case anything goes wrong while you perform the jailbreak.

Step 1

Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad via the supplied USB cable.

Step 2

Once your iPad is detected, right-click your iPad from the menu on the left and select ‘Back Up’. The process should take approximately 5 minutes or more depending on how much syncing needs to be done. The back up status can be tracked via the top progress bar in iTunes or from the status on your iPad. Once complete, we can move on to the actual jailbreak.

Jailbreak Instructions

Step 1

On your iPad, open up ‘Safari’.

Step 2

In the address bar, type in “www.jailbreakme.com” and tap on ‘Go’.

Alternatively, if you are reading this from your iPad, you can click on this link.

Step 3

Tap on ‘FREE’ followed by ‘INSTALL’.

Step 4

Safari will automatically close and you will be brought back to the home screen. You should now be able to see a Cydia icon with a progress bar on one of the pages on your home screen indicating the status of the download+install process.

When you see just the Cydia logo, that means you have successfully jailbroken your iPad. If for some reason the jailbreak failed, try repeating the whole jailbreak process a few more times.

Step 5

Open the Cydia app. Tap on ‘User’ followed by ‘Done’.

You will be brought to Cydia’s home screen. At this point, you will see a black bar status bar on top indicating that Cydia is downloading packages and releases, etc. Do not ‘Cancel’. Allow a few minutes for this to complete before starting to use Cydia.

PDF Patcher 2 Instructions (IMPORTANT)

One last thing you should do before you go off happily with your jailbroken iPad. You need to close up a security vulnerability.

JailbreakMe 3.0 takes advantage of a PDF exploit which unfortunately also leaves your iPad vulnerable to malicious attacks. The fix is simple:

Step 1

In Cydia, tap on ‘Search’.

Step 2

Type in ‘pdf patcher 2′ in the search bar on top and tap on the ‘PDF Patcher 2′ result.

Step 3

Tap on ‘Install’ followed by ‘Confirm’.

Once the installation is complete, tap on ‘Reboot Device’ to complete the patch. The reboot will take a few minutes.

Apple has hit another milestone with the iPad just 15 months since the device first launched in April 2010 with the number of iPad compatible apps swelling to 100,000+ in the App Store as first spotted by MacStories.

A quick check under “Release Date” in the App Store reveals the current exact number is 100,234 and counting. Strangely enough, both the US and Malaysia App Store have the same figures despite that some apps are only available to iPad users with the US Apple ID such as HBO GO and Vevo HD which are regionally restricted. Our guess is that the number of apps displayed reflects the correct quantity only for the US App Store.

Nevertheless, it is a huge achievement and yet another win against the naysayers who predicted the failure of the iPad. Looking back, this is a game that Apple has played before with the iPod as well as the iPhone and is continuing to play it well. Competitors are still digging around in the sandbox trying to catch-up. With the software/apps advantage that Apple has, other tablet platforms on the market such as Google’s Android Honeycomb and Palm’s WebOS have an enormous task ahead of them and that is just one factor that makes up the success of the iPad.

Apple is so far not making any fuss out of the 100,000 iPad app milestone and we’re not expecting them to. They did after all wait until the 10 ‘billionth’ App Store app download earlier this year in January to give someone a celebratory gift card and it was a whopping $10,000 (approx.
